A few months ago I started my subscription to Cake Decorating Central’s Kit of the Month as a way of learning a few new cake decorating techniques and improve my skills that little thing called fondant. The kit for August was all about the dad’s being a Father’s Day BBQ Cake.
Now this was an absolutely perfect centrepiece for Father’s Day lunch given both my dad and the hubby’s dad have spent a lot of time around the good ol’ BBQ cooking up a storm over the years.
The instructions that came with the kit actually had two sausages and two prawns on the BBQ. Despite following the instructions, I must have been a little out with my measurements as I couldn’t fit them all on.
What I ended up being most proud of was the corn. It was a little time consuming, to state the obvious, but it came up a treat. Another one of the subscribers posted a photo of their cake and they had also painted the grill marks over the corn and prawns as well which certainly looked effective.
With the kit came the tin to bake the cake in and it was the same that I used when making the boobs for my purple corset cake. There probably won’t be a need to use all three at once in the future, unless someone requests an alien female cake with three breasts… you never know.
Also for dessert, we put in a request to the hubby’s mum to make one of her pavlovas. Now my mother-in-law makes a mean pav, and her decoration of them is always exquisite so I really need to keep practising with my pavlova to try to come close.
There were also some rose macarons, pistachio macarons and a few lemon and lavender cupcakes leftover from the baby shower I baked for to share for dessert so a feast of sweet treats was had (please forgive the lack of ironing of the tablecloth).
Overall I was very happy with how the cake turned out, and learned I need to watch what I do with my hands as I kept spotting little dents in the fondant from finger prints, too much pressure or my nail (I may have left the covered cake to close as I was rolling out more fondant and my nail nicked it – not what you want at 10.30pm so there may have been a few choice words spoken). Luckily they were able to be buffed out.
Can’t wait to see what the next kit is…
